Lent for Brujas: Sacred Reflection, Fasting, and Spiritual Reclamation

Lent is often spoken of as a season of sacrifice.

But brujas know that not all sacrifice is holy, and not all letting go requires suffering.

For spiritual practitioners walking between folk magic, ancestral memory, and devotional traditions, Lent can be reframed as a season of sacred clearing rather than deprivation.

Think of this time as spiritual soil preparation.

Before seeds are planted, earth is loosened, weeds are gently removed, and the ground is made ready to receive life.

Fasting during Lent does not have to mean hunger. It can mean fasting from chaos, fasting from noise, fasting from relationships or habits that drain spiritual vitality.

Consider a bruja-style Lenten practice:

• Limit social media consumption in the morning
• Replace one anxiety-driven action with prayer or breathwork
• Light a candle for ancestors once a week
• Release one emotional burden each day by writing it down and burning or burying it safely

Herbal allies can support this season. Bitter herbs are especially meaningful because bitterness has long been associated with purification and spiritual honesty.

Drink teas slowly. Taste their medicine.

Lent is also a season of remembering the suffering of the world without carrying the world’s suffering alone.

Brujería teaches that compassion does not require self-erasure.

Devotion is not punishment.

If fasting is practiced, let it be gentle. Let it be chosen. Let it be paired with nourishment of spirit and body afterward.

Ancestral offerings are beautiful during this season.

Small cups of water, bread, flowers, or photos placed on quiet spaces speak the language of remembrance.

Lent for brujas is not about rejecting spiritual heritage.

It is about reclaiming sacred stillness inside traditions that may not always have been built for us.

Walk slowly through this season.

Something inside you is learning how to bloom after winter.
